Publications

Doctoral student Nigel Caplan and Scott Stevens published “Step out of the cycle”: Needs, challenges, and successes of international undergraduates at a U.S. university” in English for Specific Purposes, 46C (2017) pp. 15-28.

Kathy Hirsch-Pasek and Roberta Golinkoff published a blog post titled “An Oasis of Bipartisan Support: Why Early-Childhood Ed Matters” in Education Week on November 3.

Presentations

David Blacker was invited to present “The identity factory: Post-productivism and liquid education” at McGill University in Montréal, Canada.

Jan Blits, professor emeritus, gave the First Folio lecture titled “Deadly Virtue: Shakespeare’s Macbeth” for the state of Maryland at St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD. The event commemorated the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Zoubeida Dagher presented “History and philosophy of science and science education: A symbiotic relationship” at the Philosophy of Science Association Biennial Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

Zoubeida Dagher gave a plenary talk on “The power and promise of the expanded family resemblance approach to nature of science” at the Limerick Symposium on Nature of Science for Science Education held at the University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland.

Nancy Dyson, Jessica Rodrigues and Nancy Jordan presented “Many concepts, few numbers: A novel approach to math interventions” at the Innov8 Conference organized by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics in November at St. Louis, MO.

Roberta Golinkoff digitally presented Becoming brilliant: Reimagining education for our time” at the Bett Asia Leadership Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Roberta Golinkoff presented “Lessons from the crib: What’s new in language development?” at the American Speech Language Hearing Association in Philadelphia, PA.

Roberta Golinkoff gave an invited talk on “Language for reading: Lessons from the crib for the home, classroom, and library” at the Middle County Public Library Distinguished Speaker Series in Centerreach, NY.

Robert Hampel, presented “How Norman Rockwell made and lost a fortune: The famous artists school, 1948-1972” at the annual History of Education Society meeting. The paper is part of his current book project, A Brief History of Shortcuts in and around American Education.

Learning sciences PhD students Andrew Hurwitz and Felicia Hurwitz presented “Parental household size and academic achievement: An analysis of the ECLS-K 2010-2011 data” at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Annual Research Conference in Washington DC. The research was co-authored with Henry May and doctoral student Rui Wang.

Amanda Jansen was invited as the keynote speaker to present “Rough draft talk–a strategy to support learning during classroom discourse” at the National Innov8 Conference organized by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics in November at St. Louis, MO.

Charles MacArthur and Joshua Wilson presented “The reliability and validity of an automated essay scoring program for assessment of the outcomes of instruction” at the annual conference of the Literacy Research Association in Nashville.

School of Education PhD alumna, Zoi Philippakos, and Charles MacArthur presented  “Responses to reading through strategy instruction: Supporting opinion writing in grades K and 1” at the annual conference of the Literacy Research Association in Nashville.

Mathematics education doctoral students and faculty participated in and presented at the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA) Conference in Tucson, Arizona:

Professional development

William Lewis facilitated 3-day professional development sessions in Georgia school districts. The sessions involved workshops on argumentative and summary writing, inquiry and research activities for middle school social studies teachers, and model teaching of text-based summary strategies for 9th and 10th grade high school science and history classes.

Jackie Wilson is facilitating meetings that focus on school leadership strategies that the Ohio Department of Education will incorporate as key levers for school improvement and support for over 5,000 principals and assistant principals. The project is in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and the Cleveland and Lorain Counties Urban League.

Service

Jackie Wilson will serve as a member of the University of Delaware’s Community Engagement Initiative. She will present information about the community and school partnerships that specialists and coaches are involved in throughout the state.
